Barbecued Field Rat

Barbecued Field Rat

Popis: This isn't one for the squeamish! If you drive the long stretch of Cambodia’s Highway 5, you’ll see a few oddities. Not the grazing cattle as you pass. Not the small fill-up stations (although weirdly, they'll typically be selling gasoline-filled soda bottles). What will startle you are the roadside vendors hawking rows of roasted field rat. Yes. You heard that correctly. Rat. Across the countryside, the rodents make cheap, savoury snacks. City-slickers might be put off by the idea of eating rodent, but believe it or not, these rats are far healthier than their urban cousins. No matter the season, Cambodian plantations provide the free-range critters with a steady supply of food. Rainy months mean a diet of rice, while dry weather offers crops such as potato or sugarcane which make the rats nice and plump. Lucky rats. Opportunistic hunters take advantage of the rat numbers, capturing and selling them to local roadside vendors or even exporting them in bulk to Vietnam. In Cambodia, sellers cook the rat over charcoal and serve them with finger-licking dipping sauces made from lime juice and black pepper or fish sauce and chillies. But how does it taste? The skin is salty as you'd expect, similar to roast chicken, while the meat itself tastes like pork (when you close your eyes). FYI, you don't eat the tail, even though it may look extremely appetising! Most Cambodians chow down on the rat and have a cool local lager near hand, such as Angkor. Sounds like a great economical solution to control the rat population!

Adresa: In addition to Battambang, barbecued field rat is popular in the Cambodian provinces of Prey Veng, Kandal, and Takeo.
