World's Scariest Food

Surströmming - stinking herring

Popis: Surströmming - fermented herring, is one of the most abundantly found foods in the world. It smells so terrible that airlines won't allow it to be transported in mass. It is recommended that the can be opened outdoors, preferably in a plastic bag. Many rental accommodations in Sweden contain a clause that the tenant must not consume surströmming in their apartment. Eating this specialty is like an adrenaline sport. When the can is opened, the smell rises, causing the urge to vomit. But the taste is definitely better than the smell. Surströmming is mainly produced in smaller family businesses in northern Sweden along the coast known as Höga kusten. Fresh, cleaned herring will be captured in the spring and loaded into the tubs. Gradually, a self-fermenting process begins, with the formation of acids through enzymes and bacteria. It is then boiled for 8-10 weeks in cans. Surströmming is usually found in online stores, so you don't necessarily have to travel far to try this "delicacy."
