World War II Period 3 Class Map

Dunkirk (May 1940)

Description: The Miracle of Dunkirk was significant to World War II because if the evacuation failed, Britain and its allies would have lost many soldiers and lost morale to fight, likely leading to Germany winning the war. The Miracle of Dunkirk lasted between 26 May and 4 June 1940. Large numbers of Belgian, British, and French troops were cut off and surrounded by German troops during the six-week Battle of France. The evacuation attempt was to get anything that could sail and go to Dunkirk to attempt to ferry troops from the beaches and harbor mole to Britain. If they had fallen, Germany would have likely won the war, as the British were a major military force during World War II. However, not only would the allies of lost soldiers, but they would have lost morale as well. Loss of morale would have been just as terrible as losing around 400,000 Allied soldiers, because if no one fought back against the Germans due to no will to fight, Germany would have likely won World War II. Overall, the Miracle of Dunkirk was important due to the evacuation, which saved over 338,000 Allied soldiers, and without the evacuation succeeding Germany would have likely won World War II. (Max)
