Battle of Midway (June 1942)

World War II Period 3 Class Map

Battle of Midway (June 1942)

Description: The Battle of Midway marked a turning point in World War II because Japan couldn’t launch an offensive attack after the brutal loss it suffered to its naval and air force fleet, and it also stopped Japan from trying to gain more territory. The Battle of Midway was mainly between the United States and Japan. The United States broke the code between the Japanese by listening into their war plans without them knowing, and then ambushed them when they were about to attack Midway Island. On June 3rd, 1942, six months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States started its attack on Japan, and it ended on June 6th, 1942. Although it lasted 3-4 days, the amount of fighting that took place was a ton. In total japan lost 3,000 men, including 200 of their most experienced pilots, 300 aircraft, one heavy cruiser, and four aircraft carriers, while the U.S lost the Yorktown and Hammann along with 145 aircrafts and 360 service men. All in all, the United States victory was a big win, and it weakened them from expanding in the Pacific. (Gus)
