Description: Operation Barbarossa marked a major turning point in the history of World War II. In this operation, Nazi Germany and some of its European Axis allies invaded the Soviet Union. It took place in June of 1941. Operation Barbarossa was the largest military operation in history. The goal of this invasion was to conquer the Soviet Union, take its resources, and destroy its army. Two major conflicts of this operation were the Siege of Leningrad and the Battle of Stalingrad. The Siege of Leningrad was a blockade of the city that caused over a million people to die of starvation. Additionally, the Battle of Stalingrad caused over a million deaths from brutal fighting. In the end, Germany could not overcome their strategic and supply porblems such as the long, cold winter it was not prepared for, and the fact that it did not give the Soviet Union enough credit for the size of its army and amount of equipment. Consequently, Germany had to admit defeat. (Jonah Houston)
