Descripcion foto: The Five Days of Milan was an insurrection and a major event in 1848 that started the First Italian War of Independence. On 18 March, a rebellion arose in the city of Milan: the whole city fought throughout the streets, raising 1700 barricades, firing from windows and roofs, and urging the rural population to join them. The roads were broken up and covered with iron and glass to make the cavalry's action impossible. A provisional government of Milan was formed. On the morning of March 22, the city streets were under the control of the insurgents, while the Austrians controlled the Spanish walls and the Sforzesco Castle, closing the city in a circle. The clashes continued with the Milanese attacking to force the blockade and unite with the insurgents in the countryside: attacks were attempted against Porta Comasina and Porta Ticinese, both repelled; finally, a third assault on Porta Tosa (later for this reason called Porta Vittoria), was successful. The gate was conquered late at night under the light of the fires that were raging in the adjacent houses, the tricolor flag was hoisted on the ruins of the gate by Francesco Pirovano, a seventeen-year-old baker's boy. The conquest of Porta Tosa marked the victory of the revolt, with the Austrian forces abandoning the city. On March 23, the day after the end of the fighting in Milan, the Kingdom of Sardinia declared war on Austria, but its inability to take the initiative gave the Austrians the opportunity to receive reinforcements and to resume the offensive, beating the Sardinian-Piedmontese army. On August 5, the capitulation was signed, and the next day the Austrians returned to Milan.
