Descripcion foto: Porta Vercellina was one of the major gates located on the medieval route of the walls of Milan. Its gate was equipped with a drawbridge, while the Naviglio di S. Girolamo was made navigable under Filippo Maria Visconti at the beginning of the 15th century. The medieval walls of Milan were first erected in 1156, made of earth reinforced by palisades, and defended by wooden towers. They were surrounded by a moat whose location coincides with the modern streets of the 'Cerchia dei Navigli'. These defenses were destroyed by Federico Barbarossa, during the siege of Milan in 1162, and a more effective defensive system, this time in masonry, was constructed. Over time the city acquired, in its countryside, a vast array of allies, castles, strongholds, and fortified villages, and within two centuries Milan became one of the most powerful and richest pre-unification Italian states. In the following centuries, the moats of the medieval walls were used as navigable canals and represented one of the main characteristics of Milanese urban planning.
