The Execution of Guglielmo Piazza and Gian Giacomo Mora

Descripcion foto: Guglielmo Piazza and Gian Giacomo Mora were two Milanese citizens condemned to death by the Spanish authorities on charges of being a plague spreader during the great plague that struck Milan in 1630. Both accused, brought to the limit of survival with the use of "torments" in repeated and very heavy interrogations, named other names, thus involving several people in their judicial case. Piazza, Mora, and many others were eventually found guilty and sentenced to capital punishment. Placed on a cart, Piazza and Mora were taken through the streets of Milan to the place of execution, now Piazza Vetra. During the journey they were gripped with hot pincers, their right hand was cut off, and finally, they were subjected to the torture of the wheel, during which all their bones were broken. They were then exposed to the public for six hours, after which they were finally killed by having their throat cut. Their bodies were then burned and the ashes scattered in the canal that ran nearby.
