Descripcion foto: Alessandro Manzoni was an Italian poet, novelist, and philosopher. He is famous for the novel The Betrothed (in Italian: 'I promessi sposi'). On 6 January 1873, when leaving the church of San Fedele, he fell, hitting his head on one of the steps, causing a head injury. He died after 5 months of cerebral meningitis, a complication of the trauma. His funeral was celebrated in the Milan Cathedral with almost royal pomp.
