Descripcion foto: The Milan Cathedral stands in the place where two ancient basilicas stood, the Basilica Vetus (in the picture) and the Basilica Maior. The Basilica Vetus, or Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore, was one of the first churches in Milan, and the most important religious building in the city before the construction of the Milan Cathedral. Its construction began in 314 in the period in which the Roman city of Mediolanum (modern Milan) was the capital of the Western Roman Empire (a role it held from 286 to 402). The Basilica Maior, or Basilica of Santa Tecla, was built in 350 in the place previously occupied by a pagan temple dedicated to Minerva, which in turn had been built on the remains of a previous Celtic temple dedicated to the goddess Belisama. Both Basilicas were destroyed by Attila in 452, repaired in 454, destroyed again by the Goths in 539, rebuilt in 836, destroyed again in the great fire of Milan in 1075, and rebuilt once more. With the start of construction of the new cathedral in 1386, both Basilicas were finally demolished in 1386 (Basilica Vetus) and 1461 (Basilica Maior).
