Descripcion foto: Some of the most famous events staged in the Colosseum were the Naumachiae mock naval battles. The arena was flooded, and flat-bottomed boats were used. The first recorded naval entertainment in the Colosseum occurred in 80 AD, during the 100-day opening games. After the arena was flooded, flat-bottomed boats carrying 3,000 combatants re-enacted a naval battle between Syracuse and Athens. It is said that sometimes there was an island in the middle of the arena so that the combatants could disembark and fight it out on land.
