Descripcion foto: Guy Fawkes was a member of a group of provincial English Catholics involved in the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605, a failed assassination attempt against King James I by blowing up the House of Lords during the State Opening of Parliament on 5 November 1605. The plot was revealed to the authorities in an anonymous letter, and Fawkes was discovered guarding 36 barrels of gunpowder and arrested. Fawkes was transferred to the Tower of London, tortured and interrogated. Sir William Waad, Lieutenant of the Tower, supervised the torture and obtained Fawkes's confession. Him and other conspirators were found guilty of high treason, dragged from the Tower to the Old Palace Yard at Westminster, opposite the building they had attempted to destroy. His fellow plotters were then hanged and quartered. Fawkes was the last to stand on the scaffold. His lifeless body was quartered and, as was the custom, his body parts were then distributed to "the four corners of the kingdom", to be displayed as a warning to other would-be traitors.
