The Swedish Siege of Prague

Description: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Prague_(1648)

Descripcion foto: The Swedish Siege of Prague was the last engagement of the Thirty Years' War when Swedish troops operating in Bohemia attempted to occupy Prague. The Swedish army managed to occupy Mala Strana and Prague Castle already on July 26 and started looting the castle and surrounding palaces and monasteries. Two days later they attempted to enter the Old Town on the eastern bank of the river but were repulsed on the Charles Bridge by the troops of Governor Feldmarschall Rudolf von Colloredo, a veteran of the siege of Mantua and of the battle of Lutzen. Three Swedish armies launched a number of attacks against the city – not only from the west, via the Charles Bridge, but also from the north (with a bombardment from the Letná Plain) and especially from the eastern plains, towards another city quarter, the New Town. These attacks were repelled largely thanks to the skill of the Feldmarschall and the energy of his troops, as well the fierce resistance of the burghers' militia and student volunteer troops (Academic Legion) under Czech Jesuit priest Jiří Plachý and German jurist Hans Georg Kauffer. When the Peace of Westphalia, finishing the Thirty Years' War was signed on 24 October 1648, the Swedish troops left the city, bringing with them important pieces of the imperial collection such as the Codex Gigas or Codex Argenteus, 500 paintings, 70 bronze statues, 370 scientific instruments, 400 Indian curiosities, hundreds of corals, ivory, precious stones, amber, etc. Among the art objects were works by world masters such as Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Titian, Correggio, Tintoretto, Rubens, Paolo Veronese, Caravaggio, Breughel, Cranach, Dürer or Hieronymus Bosch
