František Pavlík

Descripcion foto: František Pavlík was a Moravian carpentry worker, victim of a demonstration for the establishment of a Czech-language university in Brno, which was opposed by the German-speaking community in Brno and Moravia. In October 1905, František Pavlík took part in a series of demonstrations for the establishment of a Czech-teaching university in Brno, as had been achieved in Prague in previous years. The crowd was gathered in front of the Besední dům and skirmishes between the two parties erupted, causing the intervention of the police and the army. During the charge of the infantry regiment to disperse the crowds, Pavlík was fatally wounded by a bayonet of one of the soldiers who was helping the Austrian gendarmes bring the crowd under control. He was taken to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. His funeral became a national event, attended by up to 80,000 people, according to contemporary estimates The case was never investigated by the Austrian authorities, and the soldier on whose bayonet blood was found was not punished in any way. Due to the resistance of the German community, it was not possible to establish a university in Brno under Austria-Hungary.
