Description: Uaymil is part of a complex made up of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve and its reefs. By itself it covers 89 thousand hectares and is located in the municipalities of Felipe Carrillo Puerto and Othón Pompeyo, in the state of Quintana Roo. It has one of the most important ecosystems in the region, designated as a wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention. It is also considered a priority marine and hydrological region by the National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity. Vegetation: Uaymil is covered by medium and low-lying forests as well as by freshwater wetlands (mangroves, petenes, savannas, tasistales and cenotes), forming a rich mosaic of ecosystems that protects the upper basin of the Bahía del Espíritu Santo. Representative fauna: jaguar, puma, ocelot, tigrillo, leoncillo, tapir, saraguato de Manto, white-tailed deer, anteater, flamingo, tepezcuintle, swamp crocodile and Green, Loggerhead and Carey turtles. Flora: black chechem, sapodilla, chaca or palo mulato, nance, habin, guayabillo, disheveled, kuka palm and pucte. Endemic species (exclusive to this region): mocashane grass, Kahum-Ki and sour nance. On November 17, 1994, it was decreed as a Flora and Fauna Protection Area and shortly after its Management Program was published, the purpose of which is the preservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in the area. In the Mayan language, Uaymil is the name of one of the sixteen provinces into which the Yucatan Peninsula was divided when the Spanish conquerors arrived in the first half of the 16th century.
