Description: Cold War MGM-13 Missile 1333 Old Bernice Rd. Mildred, Pennsylvania Access: 24/7 The MGM-13 was available for tactical ground target destruction as a surface-to-surface weapon. Development began in 1954. The 13A version launches from a transporter while the 13B is launched from a coffin (underground bunker) location. Once launched, it could reach Mach 0.7 to 0.85 over 540 miles at levels as low as 750 feet. It could reach 1,400 miles when launched into higher flight levels (up to 40,000 feet). During development in 1954, Goodyear designed an Automatic Terrain Recognition And Navigation (ATRAN) system so that the missile could self-correct in flight. At its speeds of approximately 650 mph (953 feet per second), the missile could compare its real time radar scanning antenna information with a series of on-board maps on 35mm film, and correct deviation in its flight path. Increased accuracy in flight allows the missile to fly at lower levels and therefore better avoid detection by radar. Stretching beyond 44 feet in length, the MGM-13 could carry the B28 thermonuclear warhead. A total of 4,500 B28s were actually produced. There were twenty different versions of the B28 developed (based on their yield and safety features). Explosive yield varied between 70 kilotons and 1.45 megatons. For comparison, the two atomic bombs, Little Boy which was dropped over Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, and Fat Man which was dropped over Nagasaki three days later, had explosive yields of 15 kilotons and 20 kilotons, respectively.
