Description: Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Bronze Obelisk Nye Beach 2 SW Elizabeth St. Newport, Oregon GPS: 44.63609, -124.06367 Access: Dawn-dusk. A short 50 yard walk if you park on the street, at the south entrance to the park. Two photos required. Vietnam Veterans Memorial at the Pacific Ocean seaside, with a bronze Obelisk off to the left-hand side. One side of memorial has “A Poem for Hope and Healing”, while the other side includes the placement of the Obelisk. This memorial recognizes the 26 service members who perished in Vietnam from this small community. The unique bronze obelisk at the head of the walkway blends in with surrounding mountain peaks that separate coastline from the land and trees. It is placed at 19 degrees to the Northeast so that the shadow of the obelisk falls across the granite arm. “Light is an appointment we must all keep when we are quiet and can find the way.” The obelisk shadow will line up every April 30, the date the Vietnam War came to a close. Made in America: Nye Beach, Newport, Oregon and this memorial are the finish point of Highway 20 which traverses to Boston, Massachusetts and the Atlantic Ocean some 3300 miles east. Watch for the sign just east of the memorial, it is on the corner of Highway 101 and Highway 20. Whale watching from this area and from this particular viewpoint is very common. Grab a bite to eat from any number of local establishments and enjoy the peace of the ocean washing ashore only a few feet from this memorial. Newport is a seaport and fresh seafood is the norm for this area. Instructions: Take a photo similar to the one attached, with rider flag and motorcycle.
