This black granite memorial to PFC Jack T Sweet stands tall in Scenic View Park overlooking the bay that he called home. Only 19 years old, PFC Sweet was killed in action at Jawwalah, Iraq on 8 February, 2008 during Operation Iraqi Freedom when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. He was a member of Delta Company, Second Battalion, 22nd Infantry, part of the 10th Mountain Division. Stationed at nearby Fort Drum, PFC Sweet was the first casualty of war from the small town of Alexandria Bay since World War II. He is remembered fondly by the town as someone who loved the outdoors and his memorial was placed specifically to grant him an expansive and permanent view of the bay that he used to enjoy.
