Description: Combat Medic Memorial Lock Haven University 432 Railroad St. Lock Haven, Pennsylvania GPS: 41.13820, -77.45650 Access: 24/7 This memorial is of a combat medic rendering aid to a wounded soldier. It is the combat medic who holds death at bay, attending to the wounded. Probably the single largest medical advancement for treating the wounded came to the combat medics during the Vietnam War when the Bell UH-1 helicopters became “Flying ICUs”. Use of the helicopters reduced the wait time of wounding-to-treatment down to an average of 35 minutes – significantly less than the 4-6 hours that the wounded endured before treatment during the Korean War. The first field corps trained as combat medics to render aid on the battlefield were in the late-1700s as part of Napoleon's Grande Army. Prior to that, wounded soldiers were left until fighting ended, unless a comrade voluntarily carried them to the rear and out of harm's way. Combat medics and ambulances were first used in the U.S. during the Civil War's Battle of Antietam in 1862. In 1864, the Geneva Convention protected trained medical personnel who were in the act of rendering aid, saving lives, and alleviating the suffering of wounded and sick persons, on the battlefields. According to the Geneva Convention, knowingly firing at a medic wearing clear insignia is a war crime. This memorial on the campus at Lock Haven University, is located at the north corner of the Health Professional Building. The combat medic training is the foundational origin of the nation's Physician’s Assistant Profession. Taught here at LHU, Physicians Assistants (PAs) are medical professionals who diagnose illness, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medications, and often serve as a patient’s primary healthcare provider. Made in America: Since 1937, Lock Haven was home to Piper Aircraft, until Piper was acquired by Lear and moved to Florida in 1984. The Piper Aviation Museum is a few miles to the east of here, at the William T. Piper Memorial Airport. The admission fee is reduced for senior citizens and military. Among the displays at the museum is The City of Angels, one of two modified PA-12 Super Cruisers to fly around the world in 1947.
