NC1 - Burnsville | Lost Boats Submarine Memorial

Description: Lost Boats Submarine Memorial 891 Moonshine Mountain Rd. Burnsville, North Carolina Access: 24/7 On the wall of this Memorial, is a ship’s anchor and chain with the letters USN and ship’s mast flies the American flag. Although moonshine country may seem like a strange place to build a memorial to submarine vets, the town does have a connection to naval history. It was named after Ottaway Burns, a North Carolina native, who was a privateer during the War of 1812. The memorial was constructed by Harrell Flowers, a chief torpedo man who served on the USS Gato during World War II. He built the memorial at his home to keep alive the memory of submarines and their crews and their epitaph “overdue and presumed lost.” Unfortunately, he died before seeing the memorial dedicated in 2003. Instructions: Take a photo similar to the one attached, with rider flag and motorcycle. A second photo may be required for location and/or safety reasons. Refer to Rules 6-8 (https://bit.ly/3m7BRWv) for photo verification. Scorers have final say whether standards are met.
