Description: White, Black, Blue and Gray 240 High St. Chestertown, Maryland GPS: 39.20893, -76.06602 Access: 24/7 Fifty years after an uneasy peace settled on the United States after the hostilities of the Civil War, this monument was erected to honor the soldiers who fought on both sides, “Blue and Gray waiting alike the judgement day.” Omitted from the 59 names, and “130 privates who served in blue” were the more than 400 blacks, slaves, and freemen alike who served as well. It was more than 80 years before the monument next to this one was erected, and their valor acknowledged. One of only six monuments in Maryland without allegiance to either side, the original monument was raised to “draw together the minds and hearts of our reunited people” and “in commemoration of the patriotism and valor of a once divided but now reunited country.” Made in America: Head down to the docks and if you are there over Memorial Day, visit the annual Chestertown Tea Party Festival complete with period costumed participants tossing tea into the harbor. In between, grab lunch or dinner at Uncle Charlie’s Bistro for classic Maryland oyster and crab dishes. Uncle Charlie’s is the winner of the Best of Eastern Shore restaurant award. https://bit.ly/3Gx3UsW Bad Alfred’s Distilling is only open Thurs-Sat but in addition to distilled spirits, serves a mean wood-fired brick oven pizza. https://badalfreds.com Instructions: Take a photo similar to the one attached, with rider flag and motorcycle.
