NOTE: This site is offered as a combination with PA5-Salisbury, 28 miles north of here. Both memorials honor Flight Buzz One Four. Both are Eagle Scout projects. At the height of the Cold War, the United States maintained a fleet of B-52 bombers always in the air, 24x7, loaded with nuclear bombs, and stationed within rapid striking distance of the USSR. The night of January 12th, 1964, a bomber with the call sign “Buzz One Four” returning to its base in Georgia via a stopover in Massachusetts encountered a fierce winter blizzard. Continuing toward home at 30,000 feet, the crew flew on with its cargo of air-to-ground missiles and two nine-megaton nuclear bombs. With the storm raging, the plane suffered a catastrophic loss of control when its tail was torn from the airframe. Rolling out of control it flipped upside down and spun into the side of Savage Mountain. The pilot and co-pilot were the sole survivors after ejecting into the storm and parachuting down to the remote Maryland countryside. The navigator and tail gunner both died of exposure before they could be rescued. The fifth crewmember, the radar bombardier failed to eject and was found later, under 14 inches of snow dropped by the storm. Eagle Scout Aaron Cuppett designed and built this memorial to honor the memory of the crew of “Buzz One Four,” casualties of a quiet battle of deterrence waged in the skies above Europe while America slept.
