MD1 - Baltimore, MD | Washington Monument

Description: Washington Monument Mount Vernon Place 699 N Charles St. Baltimore, Maryland Access: 24/7 The original Washington Monument (designed by the same man who would later design the one in Washington DC) stands in Mount Vernon Place, a section of the city created to honor George Washington and the ideals he represented. The cornerstone was laid on July 4th 1815 and the monument was re-dedicated 200 years later on July 4th 2015 after extensive renovations. This is said to the be the first public monument to honor Washington. The interior of the monument houses a gallery with a heroic bust of George Washington that has faced the south entrance since 1843 and a variety of high-tech interactive exhibits. The stair tower consists for 227 marble steps that spiral to the top through nine rotations and 130 vertical feet. At the top, a lookout area provides views of the city in four directions. Groups of five are allowed up the stairs at one time and given 20 minutes to climb up, catch their breath and look out from the top before descending again. It takes about three or four minutes to climb up. Made in America: What’s not to do in Baltimore? The Inner Harbor, Fort McHenry, Camden Yards, National Aquarium, Museums, Historic Tall Ships, Poe’s Gravesite, the Zoo, Babe Ruth’s birthplace and on and on. Do yourself a favor, spend the day. The city abounds with great restaurants – try anything in Little Italy (Isabella’s Brick Oven for pizza - https://www.isabellas.biz/) but top it off with a visit to Vaccaro’s Bakery (https://vaccarospastry.com/), you’ll be glad! Instructions: Take a photo similar to the one attached, with rider flag and motorcycle. A second photo may be required for location and/or safety reasons. Refer to Rules 6-8 (https://bit.ly/3m7BRWv) for photo verification. Scorers have final say whether standards are met.
