RI3 - Providence, RI | Beirut Marines Memorial

Description: Beirut Marines Memorial Remembrance Park East of Dyer at Hay St. Providence, Rhode Island GPS: 41.82305, -71.40756 Access: Dawn-dusk. Two photos required. In 1982, a multinational peacekeeping force including a contingent of U.S. Marines was stationed in Beirut Lebanon during the Lebanese civil war. On October 23, 1983, a suicide bomber drove a truck loaded with explosives into the Marine Barracks in Beirut. The resulting explosion killed 241 Marines of Battalion Landing Team 1/8. Only 81 survived. It was the single deadliest day for the Marines since Iwo Jima. Amongst those stationed in Beirut were ten Marines from Rhode Island. One, an 18-year-old private from North Smithfield was blown clear of the building and survived. He returned to Rhode Island and embarked on a campaign to remember the “Rhode Island Nine.” The Beirut Marines Memorial overlooking the Providence River is dedicated to the memory of those killed in the attack. Their faces, laser etched into glass panels, remind visitors of their service and their sacrifice. Engraved in the granite are the words “They Came in Peace.” Evil visited them in Beirut and this memorial is a testament to the Americans who served but never returned home. Made in America: A stop at Roger Williams Park Zoo (https://bit.ly/3sokAPo) or the world-famous Rhode Island School of Design (https://bit.ly/3q7ktFj) Museum are worth a few hours while in Providence. Or wait until nightfall and see the river on fire with the Water Fire music and pyrotechnic event throughout the summer and fall. https://bit.ly/3e9EtBn If you’re hungry, Providence is famous for its Italian restaurants and any you find on Federal Hill are guaranteed to be great. Or go by Kennedy Square and find the Haven Brothers mobile diner for a dining experience that dates back to 1893. https://bit.ly/33NjBhH Instructions: Take a photo similar to the one attached, with rider flag and motorcycle. A second photo may be required for location and/or safety reasons. Refer to Rules 6-8 (https://bit.ly/3m7BRWv) for photo verification. Scorers have final say whether standards are met.
