Located in the military housing area of Pearl Harbor, no Military ID required at this time. Doris "Dorie" Miller from Waco, Texas, was a Sailor in the United States Navy. On December 7, 1941 during the attack on Pearl Harbor, he manned anti-aircraft guns for which he had no training, and tended to the wounded, including the mortally wounded Captain. He was recognized by the Navy for his actions and awarded the Navy Cross. A USN Destroyer is named after Doris "Dorie" Miller, the African American Cook First Class, and a Gerald Ford-class aircraft carrier slated for construction in 2026 will be named after him. It marks the first time that an aircraft carrier will be named for an African American, and the first time a sailor has been so honored for actions taken as an enlisted man.
