Description: Global War on Terrorism 3110 Philadelphia Pike Claymont, Delaware Access: 24/7 Standing in a ring of granite monuments on the southern end of the Grubb-Worth Mansion is a memorial to honor those who died in Operation Enduring Freedom-Operation Iraqi Freedom. Inscribed on the base’s plaque are these words: The Guardian of Defenders Memorial-Dedicated in Honor of the Men and Women of the United States Armed Forces who gave the Last Full Measure of Devotion for their Nation in the Global War on Terrorism-Operation Enduring Freedom-Operation Iraqi Freedom. The Guardian of Defenders depicts an angel lifting up a fallen soldier, with a Battlefield Cross in on the ground in front of them. The rifle, boots and helmet show honor and respect for the dead. Although dating back to the American Civil War, the Battlefield Cross is a common sight at base camps for troops in Iraq or Afghanistan. Often the only mourning available to the troops stationed in these theaters, it provides a marker for the dead to be honored by those still in combat.
