Detailed description: The availability of safe drinking water is one of the biggest difficulties plaguing the people of Ethiopia's Sidama Zone. The project therefore aims to ensure that the inhabitants of selected kebeles in the Sidama Zone have access to safe and affordable drinking water and to enable the effective operation and sustainable management of sanitation facilities. Special emphasis is given to the needs of women, girls and people in difficult socio-economic situations. Based on a geophysical survey, a site has been identified for the excavation of a new hydrogeological borehole. Subsequently, a water supply system was constructed for public tapping points. The project includes an inventory of water resources and awareness-raising and educational activities aimed at strengthening hygiene habits and raising awareness of water-related health risks. In the target schools and health centers of one project component, new latrines were built in place of unrepairable latrines during 2019, while selected households are receiving baby playpens (baby boxes) made from locally available bamboo to protect children under 2 years old from infections.
