Detailed description: The project aims to improve the livelihoods of poor farmers in selected kebeles. The project focuses mainly on improving farming practices and better use of natural resources. The first part of the project focuses on addressing the direct causes and consequences of landscape degradation, mainly intensive deforestation and soil erosion caused by inappropriate farming, overuse of fuelwood and overgrazing. Another part of the project addresses malnutrition, which is usually most seriously affecting poor households with young children and single mothers, who are particularly vulnerable to this problem. Under the project, farmers are learning to grow new crops, especially vegetables, strengthening links with public agricultural assistance providers and introducing conservation agriculture practices such as the use of biomass as natural fertiliser.
