Detailed description: Major problems in southern Ethiopia include unsustainable land management, soil erosion and pollution. Poor management, mainly due to deforestation, stripping of slopes by grazing and subsequent erosion, results in overall environmental degradation and landscape degradation. The intention of this project is therefore to contribute to the improvement of the environment of Lake Awassa and its surroundings through the implementation of sustainable landscape management and the reduction of pollution and siltation of the lake. Participatory land use planning will be implemented and the project will improve land management by introducing innovations in agriculture and forestry. Functional protection of Lake Awassa will be built through the construction of a protective dam, buffer zone and wetlands, rehabilitation of degraded areas through afforestation and anti-erosion activities, and the establishment of subsequent sustainable management through, inter alia, capacity building of local officials and awareness raising in the local community.
Results to date: Functional protection of Lake Awasa is being built by constructing a protective dam, a protection zone and wetlands, rehabilitation of degraded areas by afforestation and anti-erosion activities is being implemented and subsequent sustainable management is being set up. Pilot implementation of fencing, furniture and planting of greenery in selected urban parks is also underway. The project also focuses on building the capacity of local officials who, through increased knowledge and practical experience, will be able to positively influence entire areas and future generations of citizens. The project is also implementing a campaign to raise awareness among residents about sustainable land management and nature conservation
