Description: Resilience and adaptability in the drought-affected Borena zone
Programme: Horizontal programme
SECTOR (OECD): Water supply and sanitation
Implementer: People in Need
Funding organization/s: Czech Development Agency
Detailed description: In September 2021, communities living in the southern lowlands of Ethiopia were already experiencing their fourth consecutive rainy season with insufficient rainfalls. A lot of traditional water sources have dried up and water quality in the remaining ones had significantly deteriorated. For pastoralist communities fully dependent on livestock rearing and agriculture, such prolonged periods of droughts have huge impacts on food security, household income and livelihoods. Some of the areas experienced both drought spells and erratic torrential rains further deteriorating access to safe water and causing increase of waterborne diseases. Therefore, the project aims to help 59 000 individuals living in Borena and West Guji zones in Oromiya region and in South Omo zone in SNNP region, which have been most affected by the current droughts or floods, to meet their most urgent water supply, sanitation and hygiene needs. Project activities include rehabilitation of water supply systems and handwashing facilities, training in their maintenance, training of health volunteers in hygiene and its promotion in the communities or distribution of sanitation supplies to target beneficiaries.
