Valašský frgál

Description: Valašský frgál, an old Moravian cake, dates back to 1826. It was born due to the gastronomic errors of housewives who often burned the tarts. Its preparation is strongly linked to festive occasions. Traditionally, only wealthier families could consume it on regular Sunday, most of the Moravian society prepared it for weddings, and other religious occasions such as christenings, Christmas and Easter. To make the dough, the flour, a little bit of sugar, butter, egg yolks and milk is mixed together and whisked until the ingredients form a smooth paste. The yeast is added and after that the obtained mixture is set aside for rising for 2-3 hours. Next, the dough is rolled into a round shape with the aid of traditional one-hand rolling pin that is made in Wallachia. Later, the topping is prepared. There are several types of topping, for example pear, curd cheese, poppyseed, jam (povidla) or walnut. On the surface, the crumble with gingerbread crumbs or ground cinnamon can be sprinkled. Today, baking with family and the women of the village only takes place in rare cases because knowledge about the old recipes is disappearing.
