Connecting Sea Turtle Conservation Through a Global Interactive Map

To strengthen collaboration and visibility in sea turtle conservation, the Oceanic Society and the SWOT Program launched the Sea Turtle Directory – an interactive, community driven map. This living platform allows hundreds of organizations to present and manage their conservation projects, making it easier to discover, connect, and collaborate. Researchers, volunteers, and conservationists can now not only find relevant initiatives geographically, but also identify partnerships based on research focus or specialization. What began as a simple directory is evolving into a vibrant global community map, bridging gaps in the fragmented world of sea turtle conservation.

ABOUT THIS CLIENT

Oceanic Society is a U.S.-based nonprofit founded in 1969, dedicated to conserving marine wildlife and habitats by deepening connections between people and nature. They lead global initiatives focused on marine biodiversity, including long-term sea turtle conservation efforts.

The State of the World’s Sea Turtles (SWOT) Program, managed by Oceanic Society in collaboration with Duke University and other partners, is a global network of scientists and conservationists working to protect sea turtles through open data, collaborative research, and public engagement.

When conservation is scattered, progress is slow. A shared map empowers organizations to unite, collaborate, and amplify their efforts.

The Challenge: Fragmentation and Limited Visibility

Despite thousands of active sea turtle conservation efforts worldwide, many organizations remained disconnected, operating in isolation without an easy way to find or collaborate with others. Data about programs was scattered, outdated, or difficult to access for both researchers and the public. There was a clear need for a centralized, living directory to bridge these gaps—and to make information about sea turtle conservation globally accessible.

The Solution: A Unified, Interactive Directory

Built on Mapotic’s white-label platform, the Sea Turtle Directory organizes and visualizes global conservation efforts in a simple, searchable format. Organizations can submit or update their profiles directly in the map, ensuring dynamic and community-driven data maintenance.

Key Benefits of Using an Interactive Mapping Platform

Centralized visualization of fragmented efforts
Dynamic, community-driven updates
Intuitive filtering and categorization
Multilingual accessibility
Flexible data integration
Embeddable and sharable map views

Mapping Knowledge for Action

The Sea Turtle Directory transforms a fragmented conservation landscape into a cohesive global network. By facilitating collaboration, minimizing duplication, and increasing awareness, the directory enables faster coordination of resources and accelerates research and conservation outcomes.

Organizations can now identify neighboring projects, exchange specialized knowledge (e.g., toxin sampling vs. nesting monitoring), and create stronger, cross-border partnerships—all through a shared digital map.

Join the movement

The Sea Turtle Directory is a living network connecting conservationists, researchers, and supporters worldwide. Add your project and help strengthen global sea turtle protection.
