During July 2019, several distributed attacks were conducted to make the Mapotic service inaccessible. Our IT team had to take measures to eliminate downtime.

We apologize for the short-term outages that Mapotic has faced since the beginning of July. The platform became the target of distributed denial of service attack (DDOS), which came from all over the world and aimed to overload servers to achieve unavailability of the site and all related services. Attackers unknown and very difficult to detect in case of DDOS attacks.
Immediately after the first of the attacks, the IT team modified the infrastructure and firewalls and the main sources of attack were eliminated in units of hours. However, after a few days, a new, more sophisticated form of attack appeared, and Mapotic had a few hours of downtime again. We have taken steps to increase the security of the platform and its resilience to similar types of attacks, where the goal is to overwhelm requests. We monitor the situation and we believe no further downtimes should occur.
There was no breach of application security or sensitive user data in the attack, apparently this was not even the goal of attackers – that was to make the service inaccessible because of its overload.
However, since these are repeated attacks, we are already in touch with the situation with the National Cyber Security Center and ready to escalate this further if attacks continues.

We apologize to all users for the problems and unavailability of the service and believe that the measures taken will prevent repetition. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us via [email protected].
