At Mapotic, our technology powers numerous wildlife tracking projects around the world. Many of these initiatives rely on specialized tracking hardware from leaders like Argos and Wildlife Computers—experts in remote tracking of animals across oceans, polar regions, and other hard-to-reach environments.
Argos Data Visualization: Bringing Wildlife Tracking to Life
Argos has been operating its own satellite constellation for decades, providing global coverage where conventional GPS and GSM technologies fall short. You can read more about the latest trends in tracking tech in our article here.
However, while these platforms are excellent at data collection, they often lack tools for advanced GPS data visualization. Users typically need to export raw data into spreadsheets or hire developers to build custom tools—often costly and time-consuming.

A Smarter Way to Visualize Live Tracking Data
That’s where Mapotic comes in. We’ve invested thousands of hours into developing tools for visualizing and managing live tracking data, including data from Argos, Wildlife Computers (often using Argos tech), and Movebank.
Our platform is data-source agnostic—able to integrate with any structured data or API. For Argos in particular, we’ve built a dedicated connector that supports smart filtering of GPS data based on accuracy, and offers a backend for post-processing location data—letting users adjust, depublish or annotate specific pings.
One of the best showcases of our work is the OCEARCH Shark Tracker, the world’s largest real-time shark tracking platform.
We enrich maps not only with standard layers but also with marine-specific sources like Windy maptiles (sea currents, air flow) and ESRI ocean maps (seafloor topography). We also use sea boundaries to reduce false pings near coastlines.

Adding Environmental Context to Argos Data
On top of raw tracking data, we can integrate environmental data from satellite observation services—such as sea surface temperature, air temperature, salinity, and even plankton density—to give deeper context to animal movements.
The result is a powerful and intuitive map-based visualization that transforms raw tracking data into a compelling experience for the end user. These can be deployed as standalone web apps or fully-branded mobile apps, offering a seamless, engaging experience with optional features for user interaction, monetization, or donation-driven revenue models.
