Historical Period: Victorian (1837-1901), 20th Century
Point Description: The Bishop Middleham Colliery shaft was first sunk on 26 March 1846. In 1880 it appeared under the ownership of Bolckow, Vaughan and Co., Ltd. They were acquired by Dorman, Long and Co., Ltd. - a Middlesborough-based iron manufacturer - in 1929 who re-opened the site and employment was 31 (18 below, 13 surface). Two mining accidents occurred in short order - killing Martin Livett, 45, on 26 November 1929 from falling rock and Joseph Spence, 24, on 6 March 1930 due to an explosion caused by a faulty lamp and unsafe gas conditions. Employment was 7 in 1930 and the site closed for good in 1936. More than 50 other collieries and coal pits have been documented within a 7km radius of this site.
